Hostile Environment: Borders, Policing, Prisons, & the Public Good

(Español abajo)

November 21, 2020 – 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (U.S.)

We have seen time and time again, across various regional and national contexts, the concept of “borders” extends far beyond geographic boundaries. From authoritarian regimes to “democratically-elected” neoliberal capitalist governments, borders – and the hostile environments they bolster – have become a tool of state repression, policing, and the prison industrial complex. In the UK, “Hostile Environment” and making life inhospitable for migrants has become an official government policy. In Northern Europe, the welfare state has become an extension of violence and surveillance against refugees and asylum seekers. In Nigeria, identity is policed through internal borders. And the Greek island of Lesbos has become in and of itself a “hostile environment” birthing a burgeoning anti-authority movement.

In this international panel, we look at how borders manifest physically, institutionally and ideologically – and how activists are fighting back against them.

Entorno hostil: fronteras, vigilancia, prisiones y el bien público

21 de noviembre, 2020 – 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
