Organizational Overview:

Free Migration Project (FMP) works at the intersection of law and community organizing to promote freedom of movement as a basic human right. Founded in 2016, Free Migration Project represents immigrant clients in their legal proceedings, provides legal support and training to organizers and advocates, engages in public education and outreach, litigates in the public interest, and advocates for fair and open immigration laws.

We currently provide representation for individuals and families in approximately 70 immigration matters, including applications for citizenship, permanent residence, asylum, and family reunification, as well as deportation defense and federal appeals. 

Free Migration Project provides support to the National Sanctuary Collective, a nationwide network of sanctuary campaigns, and is the fiscal sponsor for the Shut Down Berks Coalition, which organizes to end family detention in Pennsylvania. Since 2019, we have coordinated a legal response to the egregious civil fines ICE issued against sanctuary leaders around the country. Recently we coordinated and sponsored the third annual Open Borders Conference, and we launched, a free, fully bilingual, online immigration legal resource. In June, we mobilized with the community and members of City Council to stop the private medical deportation of a client. We are now working with community partners and elected officials to push for policy changes to regulate this abhorrent practice.

Position Summary:

The Staff Attorney will provide direct representation and engage in community outreach and education in support of FMP’s mission to promote free movement as a human right. The Staff Attorney will help FMP expand its current capacity to provide direct legal services, as well as serve a supportive role in some campaign work in order to better achieve organizational objectives.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide direct legal services to low-income immigrants, with a geographic focus on Philadelphia and the surrounding counties, but including clients in Pennsylvania, South New Jersey, and Delaware.
  • Represent clients in community-supported deportation defense campaigns and efforts to bring deported people back to the U.S.
  • Engage and inform members of the immigrant community by curating content for FMP’s online immigration legal resource,

Desired Qualifications and Skills:

  • Law Degree or Admission to the bar of any state in the U.S. (will consider a law graduate planning on taking the Winter 2021 bar examination).
  • Experience in immigration law, including clinical or pro bono experience.
  • Based in the Philadelphia area or can relocate to Philadelphia within 90 days of date of hire.
  • Non-English language fluency strongly preferred (e.g. Spanish, Khmer, or French).
  • Passionate about social justice, advocating for immigrants’ rights and abolishing the U.S. immigration system.

Working Conditions:

This position will be primarily virtual until conditions under the pandemic improve. Client files and office equipment will be accessible in the office to staff on a rotating daily schedule so that multiple staff are not present in the office at the same time. We are closely monitoring COVID-19 precautions in Philadelphia and will resume full in-office work in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia when it is safe to do so. Please note that the office space is a second floor walk-up without an elevator. We apologize for this current configuration.

The position is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, with some work anticipated in the evenings or weekends (flex time will accommodate evening or weekend work).

As public health conditions permit over the course of 2021, frequent travel to locations in the area is anticipated for community events, meetings with public officials, and visits to detained clients, with less frequent travel to New York, Washington, D.C., and other locations.  

Pay and Benefits:

The salary for the position is $40,000 per year, with employer-provided health benefits. FMP uses a horizontal salary structure, where all full-time employees receive the same salary.
