Legal Internship – Summer 2019
Free Migration Project is looking for a summer law student intern to help us challenge the immigration system on the personal and systemic levels, working in collaboration with lawyers, immigrant organizers, and grassroots groups. The intern will assist with current client deportation defense cases, including legal research and writing, client interviews, and possible attendance in court; provide campaign support, including engaging with community organizers and elected officials; and assist with public education and outreach to promote open migration policies.
In summer 2018, our summer legal intern:
- helped research and draft legal memorandums for cancellation of removal, adjustment of status, Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) cases, and DACA renewal applications,
- attended a final hearing in Immigration Court,
- attended meetings with community organizers, and
- managed the organization’s webpage and social media accounts.
Free Migration Project is a nonprofit organization based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, that represents immigrant clients, advocates for fair and open immigration laws, provides legal support and training to organizers and attorneys, and engages in impact litigation. Free Migration Project promotes the recognition of migration as a basic human right. Free Migration Project’s recent work includes supporting the Shut Down Berks campaign to end detention of immigrant families in Pennsylvania, training immigration attorneys how to engage in public deportation defense campaigns, and representing families in Sanctuary in Philadelphia.
The position is unpaid and anticipated to last 10 weeks, from early June to mid-August. Some background in immigration law or advocacy is preferred, as is Spanish fluency.
